Muriel, Priscilla, Ballroom Dancing and ABBA, Too! Aussie Movie Musicals Rule, Mate!

It’s time to remember how great movies can make you feel…and how musicals can brighten your mood and put a dance in your step!

Whether you are the Queen Of The Desert, or a blushing new bride…

Grab a partner and dance, dance, dance!

Here are three GREAT movies from Australia that are full of music, dancing, drama, laughs and great performances! Put a smile on and let’s go dancing!

Strictly Ballroom

Director Baz Luhrmann burst onto the movie scene with this exuberant movie musical that celebrates ballroom dancing AND individualism!

Scott Hastings is a champion caliber ballroom dancer, but much to the chagrin of the Australian ballroom dance community, Scott believes in dancing “his own steps”.

Fran is a beginning dancer and a bit of an ugly duckling who has the audacity to ask to be Scott’s partner after his unorthodox style causes his regular partner to dance out of his life.

You see, Scott just can’t dance like everyone else – he needs to express his artistic freedom on the dance floor…and that doesn’t sit well with Barry Fife, who runs the competition…

Barry Fife: Well, of course, you can dance any steps you like! But that doesn’t mean you’ll…
[Slam into a close-up of Barry's mouth]
Barry Fife: …win.

So Scott teams up with Fran – well, after she challenges him to give her a chance:

Scott: Look, a beginner has no right to approach an Open Amateur.
Fran: Yeah, well an Open Amateur has no right to dance non-Federation steps, but you did, didn’t you?
Scott: But that’s different.
Fran: *How* is it different? You’re just like the rest of them! You think you’re different, but you’re not, because you’re just, you’re just really scared! You’re really scared to give someone new a go, because you think, you know, they might just be better than you are! Well, you’re just pathetic, and you’re gutless. You’re a gutless wonder! Vivir con miedo, es como vivir a medias!

Together, these two misfits try to win the Australian Pan Pacific Championships and show the Ballroom Confederation that they are wrong when they say, “there are no new steps!”

One of the great aspects of this movie is how individuals can express their creativity and overcome obstacles…as Fran says defiantly in the film:

Fran: “A life lived in fear is a life half lived!”

Director Baz Luhrmann participated in the sorts of ballroom dancing competitions shown in the movie. Stricly Ballroom began life as an improvised play, featuring Luhrmann. The play was later performed at the Sydney Theatre Company.

This is a great celebration of dancing, and certainly helped prime America for “Dancing With The Stars!”

Speaking of individualism, get ready for THIS!

Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert

What a terrific movie – that also celebrates individualism – and does it ever!

Two drag-queens and a transexual contract to perform a drag show at a resort in Alice Springs, a resort town in the remote Australian desert.

They head west from Sydney aboard their lavender bus, Priscilla. The film celebrates their hilarious, and at times dramatic, journey across the outback.

Felicia: [after showing him the bus he had bought for their trip] Ta-da! What do you think?
Tick: When do we have to return it to the school?

Lots of credit must go to the Actors who stepped up to play these roles, including iconic Actor Terence Stamp…

As well as Hugo Weaving, perhaps best known as the bad guy from “The Matrix”, shown here on the left…

The guys bicker, argue, and grow close as they head to their performance…

Bernadette: [to Tick about Felicia] “One more push, I’m gonna to smack his face so hard he’ll have to stick his toothbrush up his arse to clean his teeth!”

Here is a terrific anecdote: Due to a heavy filming schedule, lots of filming was done while the entire crew was on the road. But because the bus was such a small set, there was no room for the crew. As such in many scenes, they are actually in shot, hiding under clothes and other props.

Bernadette: [to Felicia] That’s just what this country needs: a cock in a frock on a rock.

The giant shoe is an iconic image, and ultimately is used in the ads for the popular “Priscilla” musical…

According to director Stephan Elliott, he took the three leads out in drag prior to the beginning of filming. None of them were recognized: Guy Pearce took the opportunity to be outrageously rude, Terence Stamp eventually forgot he was in drag and started hitting on girls, and Hugo Weaving got super-drunk and lay under a table for hours, tapping his finger in time to the music. This last detail was incorporated into the film in the hotel room scene.

A wonderful movie, and a terrific musical as well!

Now, time for some ABBA!

Muriel’s Wedding

Everyone loves a blushing bride, right? And everyone loves ABBA! Put the two of them together and you have a brilliant musical that is also very serious, as a young woman tries to find value in her life…

Muriel finds life in Porpoise Spit, Australia dull and spends her days alone in her room listening to Abba music and dreaming of her wedding day.

Slight problem, Muriel has never had a date. Then she steals some money to go on a tropical vacation, and meets a crazy new friend, Rachel Griffiths…

Muriel decides to make up a new life and changes her name to “Mariel”, and turns her world upside down.

[repeated line]
Joanie: You’re terrible, Muriel.
Muriel: When I lived in Porpoise Spit, I used to sit in my room for hours and listen to ABBA songs. But since I’ve met you and moved to Sydney, I haven’t listened to one Abba song. That’s because my life is as good as an Abba song. It’s as good as Dancing Queen.

The writer/director P.J. Hogan wanted to use the music of ABBA in the film. At first, permission for the music to be used was denied. When the director promised to fly to Europe to plead his case to the founders of the band, permission was granted, as long as the band received a percentage of the film profits.

The film turned out to be a big international hit, and thus helped inspire the very successful Broadway show which became the movie Mamma Mia!. Smart move, Abba!

The film is serious, because Muriel is sad, lonely and DESPERATE to be a bride…

Rhonda: You’ve tried on every dress in Sydney!
Muriel: That doesn’t mean I’m gonna get married.
Rhonda: Then what DOES it mean?
Muriel: It means I WANT to get married. I’ve always wanted to get married.

Muriel: When I lived in Porpoise Spit, no one looked at me. But when I moved to Sydney, Brice asked me out and that proves that I changed and I’m not her anymore.
Rhonda: Her?
Muriel: Muriel! Muriel Heslop. Stupid, fat and useless. I hate her! I’m never going back to being her again! Why can’t it be me? Why can’t I be the one?

Here is some great trivia…first, let’s go back to “Priscilla”…meet Australian character Actor Bill Hunter, shown here on the left as “Bob The Mechanic”:

And now, here is a great quote from “Muriel’s Wedding, as Muriel’s dad, Bill The Battler, talks about his political career, and what could have been:

“I was nearly in State Government. Four million votes I needed. No one knew who won for three days ’till the postal vote came in. For three days I was almost there… You reap what you sow. You’d think I’d learn that growing up on a farm. You reap what you sow.”

Bill Hunter was filming The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Muriel’s Wedding at the same time, each requiring him to have different length hair, beard and to be in different parts of the country. Both films developed international cult followings and prominently featured the music of ABBA.

Toni Collette is perfect as Muriel, the film has very serious moments but is ultimately, like all three of these films, uplifting and positive – with Abba!

Sasha Grey’s Melbourne! Exploring Australia’s Exotic Southern City With Sasha Grey!!

Welcome to Melbourne, Australia!

I love this shot of what quickly became one of my favorite places to visit – Melbourne, Australia! What a gorgeous city, sitting on the southern edge of the world! The picture below is a view from the world’s tallest building – southern hemisphere edition – more on that later…

In the picture above, you can see the Tasman Sea on the left, Tasmania is straight ahead, and the Indian Ocean is to the right…keep going south and you will soon find Antarctica. Melbourne IS at the bottom of the world!

Melbourne is the capital and most populous city in the state of Victoria, and the second-most populous city in Australia. As of June 2011, the greater geographical area had a population of 4.1 million. Inhabitants of Melbourne are called Melburnians or Melbournians.

This is the downtown area as seen from above – at the very bottom you can see the classic train station – and here is a view of the rest of the city and the environs beyond:

I had the chance to go to Melbourne, and I fell in love with it. It is a very sophisticated European-style city, which is different than most parts of Australia. Here’s an idea of what the street vibe is:

Melbourne was founded in 1835 (47 years after the European settlement of Australia) by settlers from Launceston in Van Diemen’s Land. It was named by Governor of New South Wales Sir Richard Bourke in 1837, in honour of the British Prime Minister of the day, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne. Melbourne was officially declared a city by Queen Victoria in 1847.

Melbourne was ranked as the world’s most liveable city by the Economist Group’s Intelligence Unit in August 2011 and again in 2012. Look at this serene river scene and you can see why:

Flinders Street Train Station!

I woke up early one morning and walked past the Flinders Street Station, a gorgeous building that houses Melbourne’s active train system:

This is a classic and active train station, with a vibrant yellow exterior:

After a short walk, I was in the park by the river, where I was greeted by dozens of rowers hitting the river…

It’s a gorgeous walk, and if you turn to your right, you gaze upon this:

Eureka!

The Eureka tower is a modern masterpiece looking out over all of Southern Australia. It is a beautiful building rising 88 floors above Melbourne.

Filming 88 Stories Up With Sasha Grey!

The observation deck (Eureka Skydeck 88) occupies the entire 88th floor of the Eureka Tower and is the highest public vantage point in a building in the Southern Hemisphere at 285 m (935 ft). It opened to the public on 15 May 2007…we filmed up in the tower…here is a shot of the crew and our Host Sasha Grey…

Skydeck 88 features ‘The Edge’ – a glass cube which projects out from the building with visitors inside, suspended almost 984 ft above the ground. When you enter, the glass is opaque as the cube moves out over the edge of the building. Once fully extended over the edge, the glass becomes clear. Here is Sasha inside before the glass clears…

When the glass clears you can look straight down, or out at the view of the world…

I love views from this height, especially when you can get a 360 degree feel for the city and its surroundings….

Birrarung Marr!

Back on the ground, you walk over to Birrarung Marr, which is an inner-city park between the central business district in Melbourne and the Yarra River. It was opened in 2002.

The name means ‘river of mists’ and ‘river bank’ in the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people, the original Indigenous inhabitants of the Melbourne area.

Melbourne’s Talking Bridge!

One of the unique aspects to the park is a “talking” bridge…as you walk across, you get a unique montage of audio, including aborigine sounds, chats and music…it gets louder as you walk across, as the sound scape is activated by your movement…it is beautiful and hypnotic…

Looking to your right, you see the soccer stadium and the railroad tracks that lead out of town…

To the right of the stadium is the Rod Laver Arena – a tennis stadium that is part of the Melbourne Park complex, the main venue for the Australian Open in tennis since 1988. The arena’s name officially changed in 2000 to honor Rod Laver, a three-time winner of the Australian Open and one of world’s greatest tennis players. YOu can get a better look at the complex from, where else, Eureka:

The train tracks go right into downtown Melbourne, and on this quiet Saturday morning it makes the town feel deserted…

I felt like I had the town to myself, and after walking across the “talking bridge”, I felt like I had entered a town that hadn’t opened yet…

Sasha Signing

We filmed in Melbourne for two days – and while we were there, my Host Sasha Grey appeared for a signing at a local store, where hundreds of fans lined up to meet her…

Sasha was great to work with, and it was fun to see her interact with her fans, who got autographs and posed for pictures…she was great with all of them…I am always impressed with talent who can exude a positive, friendly attitude with fans, talking to each one just enough to make them feel special, especially when there are hundreds waiting…

Sasha was a total professional, terrific to work with, and it made the entire shooting experience in Melbourne relaxed and fun…we only had two days in Melbourne but we got to see a lot of it in that time…and the Melbournians were gracious and friendly.

After the signing, we posed together – I take a lot of pictures, but it is always the best way to remember our team’s fun Melbourne adventure!

Crown Casino Finale!

Melbourne Australia

After filming all day, we went to the Crown casino for dinner, and then walked through the casino, which was packed with people…and all we wanted was to find the exit.

Melbourne Australia

So we traipsed through the casino, went past the same restaurant we had just exited, and finally found ourselves outside on the terrace overlooking the taxi stand…on the other side of huge cement “planters” – which we all, including Sasha, climbed over and dropped down to the ground – dropping down about ten feet below…and we all just laughed and laughed – then we walked over to the taxi stand, where a huge mass of people waited…and taxis stood idle.

Melbourne Australia

Not knowing the procedure, I just walked up to one and we all got in, and we all left a huge group of people standing by the taxi stand…not quite sure what just happened, we all just laughed and called it a night, and the next morning we were off to Sydney…after two days of adventures in one of the most beautiful cities in the world…Melbourne!

Sasha Grey Shark Diving! Sydney’s Bugs! Opera House Beauty – Australia Rules!

Hello, Sydney!

Welcome to one of the most beautiful sights in the world! It’s Sydney, Australia of course, and the gorgeous Opera House – one of the most beautiful buildings in the world, along with Sydney’s iconic Harbor Bridge…a million different ways to film it and I tried them all….

The city offered a million gorgeous views, and thanks to an opportunity I had to film in Australia, I managed to capture some of Sydney’s iconic images!

Sasha Grey Explores Australia!

Like I said, I took a lot of pictures, and usually force my co-workers to take them as well…Sasha Grey hosted a show that we filmed in Australia, so we got the chance to check out many of Sydney’s most beautiful locations like the Opera house…

You can walk along the water in Sydney – a huge park that leads right to the Opera house – and you find numerous opportunities to film these two iconic images – the Opera House and the Harbor Bridge – in what is a beautiful, and very relaxed city…

One regret is that we didn’t get the chance to tackle one of Sydney’s most exciting tourist attractions: what you see below are people on Harbor bridge – you can actually climb the outside of the bridge to the top, which would certainly offer a unique view…

Aboriginal Music!

We passed a native Aborginal, playing a didgeridoo, a beautiful, haunting sound that is impossible to replicate, although I did buy one and have it shipped home…it showed up safe and sound…and still unplayed…

Sasha Swims With Sharks!

The purpose of our time in Sydney was to showcase some of the more exciting things you can do in the city, and so Sasha agreed to film a sequence that involved her learning to scuba…

We filmed the hour of instruction she got, getting familiar with the equipment before shooting one of the coolest things I’d ever filmed…and in the picture above you can check out that underwater camera that goes into the tank with them!

Manta Ray!

After being prepped, Sasha went into the huge tank, along with one cameraman and instructor, and the rest of us made our way into the underwater viewing area, shadowed by a very big manta ray above us!

Here is where it gets really cool: Sasha and her Instructor WALK through the underwater coral reef…while we can watch them through the glass, they slowly make their way through the water, but they are not alone…

Shark Alert!

That’s right, they are in the water with sharks! And these aren’t little baby sharks, either: Sasha was in the water with real live, full grown sharks, with nothing separating her from them, no protection other than a very calm and experienced Instructor leading the way…

Sharks Everywhere!

You might think this is behind glass, but it wasn’t, and at one point Sasha actually had a shark flip his tail at her head…but she remained calm and didn’t react at all, which is what she had been trained to do, and very bravely filmed a terrific sequence!

Great job as always by Sasha, willing to take on any challenge – and we had a great shooting experience in Sydney while we were there…

Sydney’s Bugs! – Welcome To Sydney’s Fish Market

Back on dry land, I headed to Sydney’s fish market to see what type of unique fish they had for sale…and I wasn’t disappointed!

Sydney’s fish market is one of the largest in the world, with a nice commercial area to eat and shop, and to explore some of Australia’s most unique species…

Moreton Bay Bugs!

Have a bug! That’s right, this is a unique species to Australia – a “bug”, kind of a shrimp’s body stuck on a smashed Lobster’s head…and it takes like it! Delicious!

As you can see by the sign, they aren’t cheap… although since these prices are in Australian dollars it actually might not be that much…can’t remember the exchange rate…

Beautiful Sydney!

The entire team had a great trip to Australia – the weather was gorgeous, the people were amazingly friendly, and the food was great! Thanks to everyone in Sydney who helped us have such a great time and get such great stories…more to come!

July 4th Fireworks

One year ago today I started this blog – my wife Alex recommended it as a fun creative outlet – and for me it has been just that…allowing me to share a number of different stories, such as when Alex and I went to Provence, and the beautiful village of Gigondas:

Gigondas france

You can read the whole story by searching “Provence” – and see how we cooked on Julia Childs’ stove with Patricia Wells:

Julia Childs and Patrica Wells

Thank You!

I want thank EVERYONE who has stopped by to read a post – I sincerely appreciate the interest. I realize that I cover a LOT of ground on the blog – everything from food to travel as I’ve noted above, along with classic movies and crazy exploitation, and of course – BACON.

Bacon!

supersized bacon-burger

I admit that I have posted A LOT about bacon, in all of its crazy shapes and forms…like this:

bacon hat

And of course, bacon isn’t always friendly, as evidenced by this picture of bacon getting ready for battle:

baon helmet

I have also shared many crazy bacon recipes, and I have tried to cover that world by showcasing such culinary delights as the double bacon melt!

double bacon melt

Bacon! Burgers!

The world is full of great food, but everyone seems to really spark to the pictures I post of some of the world’s best burgers, like this masterpiece from Taylor’s Refresher in Napa Valley…

Taylors Refresher cheeseburger

It has, of course, been a year of super-sized food, especially in the world of burgers and bacon! Everything from this: the world’s largest bacon cheeseburger…

world's largest bacon cheeseburger

to THIS…The Bacon Demon!

bacon-demon

I LOVE my bacon demon…and if you enter “bacon” or “cheeseburger” into the search area, you will see dozens of posts regarding these two “most important” food groups…and thanks to all of you who have read the posts from this past year and celebrated all that bacon has to offer….

Great Movies! Classic Exploitation! Asian Extreme!

I love great movies, and have posted stories about some of the 70′s most overlooked gems, like this one:

the last of sheila

I also love classic action movies like “The Seven Ups” and more recently, “The Raid: Redemption”…and of course I LOVE classic exploitation like this:

Mantis In Lace

Mantis In Lace!

I mean, how can you NOT love this? 70′s exploitation revolving around a woman who drugs men with a psychodelic BANANA and kills them? Look, if it’s good enough for The President AND Vice President:

President Obama

I LOVE that they were photographed in the shadow of “Mantis In Lace!” I know that I test the patience of food and travel lovers when I go off on a movie rant, but I’m like everyone else – I enjoy the best of the WORST – like my very popular post about the “Ten MOST Misguide Movies Of All Time”…including this gem:

cant-stop-the-music-poster

Yep, a disco musical starring Bruce Jenner and The Village People, released just moments after disco died…and one of the most misguided films of all time!

Never Cut Funny!

So clearly, I love a lot of different things….and that is what I post, a lot of different things – yes, including stuff like this:

exploding balloon head

With that said, here are some interesting facts about my first year blogging:

The Most Viewed Posts:

I have posted 283 stories this past year. Here are a couple of the most widely read – everything from exploitation films to food, travel and swimming with sharks:

Christina Lindberg – The Queen Of “Artsploitation!”

christina lindberg ad

Swedish born Christina Marinette Lindberg was internationally known for her work as an actress and glamour model in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Her rough grindhouse movie “Thriller” aka “They Call Her One Eye” inspired Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill”.

They call her one-eye-poster

She is a fascinating woman – an exploitation icon as evidenced by the number of hits I get daily – check out her story by searching “Christina Lindberg”…a fascinating Actress who bared all for her art, and these WERE european art films – as you will see when you watch one…

Sasha Grey!

Sasha Grey Australia

I had the good fortune to work with Sasha Grey in Australia, and my story about that trip – when she swam in a tank full of sharks – got more views than any other post in its first month online…thanks to all of the Sasha fans for checking it out – Sasha tweeted me as well about how much she loved this shoot…

sasha grey-in-tower

Another very popular post was all about my wife’s smash hit show:

Jerseylicious!

jerseylicious-cast-appearance

First, here is the official style network page for the show, with tons of pics and videos…http://www.mystyle.com/mystyle/shows/jerseylicious/index.jsp

“Jerseylicious” premiered on the Style network in March of 2010. Season 5 premieres next month – what a ride it has been!

If you watch, you know how great Olivia and Tracy are – oh, and you also know they don’t get along!

I also posted a bunch of “Jerseylicious” fun facts, like the fact that – if you want to go left – you have to take a right!

Tokyo!

I have posted a number of stories about my various trips to Japan – all have been well received, so thank you for that! The single most popular post involved the Tokyo adventures of my Host Alex Sim-Wise!

Alex Sim-Wise!

I shared my adventures in Tokyo filming with London Correspondent Alex Sim-Wise, who isn’t shy about dressing up for a shoot:

alex sim-wise-in-her-blue-wig-outfit

She explored everything that makes Tokyo the most exciting city in the world, including jumping behind the counter at one of Tokyo’s tiny bars in the Golden Gai district:

alex sim-wise laugh-golden-gui-bar

She capped off a perfect night of filming by leaving her self-portrait in the bar on the wall…check it out when you go there!

alex sim-wise self-portrait-line-drawing

Harems, Killer Badgers, Oh No!

So, it’s not all good news…there have been a few posts that just, for whatever reason, failed to garner much interest at all. Here is an example: I thought you would all be interested in a look at some of the classic “men’s mags” from the 50′s…boy, WAS I WRONG!

nature_in_revolt_01

NOBODY was interested in this…more than two months after I posted this story, there has been very little interest in reading it….OK, I thought it was a fascinating time in publishing – before my time, but to me it evoked a “Mad Men” vibe and highlighted a time when magazines were discreet, and these offered young boys a more adult “Indiana Jones” sense of adventure…

Daring Dolls Magazine

And The MOST Popular Post EVER Is…

Again, thanks to everyone who has stopped by and read a post. I will continue to try and post stuff that interests and entertains you, like this one, which is the most popular one I have ever posted!

And A Baba Yaga To You All!

Yep, “Baba Yaga” tops the list of the most widely read post ever! So, for those of you who may not have read it and want to know, WHAT IS BABA YAGA!?

First, “Giallo” is an Italian genre of literature and film, which indicates crime fiction and mystery, and includes elements of horror fiction and eroticism.

giallo-book

The word giallo is Italian for “yellow” and stems from the origin of the genre as a series of cheap paperback mystery novels with trademark yellow covers, and they became movies with provocative titles like this:

strip-nude for your killer

And I wrote about one in particular, a strange little giallo called “Baba Yaga”…and every single day dozens of people read the post…it has MORE THAN 5,000 views to date – the most of any single post, so congrats to the “Baba Yaga” in you all!

Baba Yaga

The Next Year…

Thanks again for reading my posts this first year, and next year I plan to post more of the same, such as this story coming soon about Alex Sim-Wise and her journey into Tokyo’s dark recesses…

Also, more to come with Sasha Grey, travels to Copenhagen and Bangkok – plus a lot of burgers and bacon as well!

And now a request: please, please, please – send me notes! Let me know what you think! Tell me what you like, and what you hate!

Sasha Grey John Rieber

Time to head back to Australia with Sasha Grey for more travel adventures, this time at the most beautiful beach in the world!

Welcome To Paradise – Courtesy Of Bondi Beach!

Without a doubt, this is one of the most spectacular views in the world – this is Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia…which I was fortunate enough to visit while filming in Australia with our Host Sasha Grey…and of course, I took a lot of pictures to share with you!

Heading To Bondi Beach!

“Bondi” is an Aboriginal word meaning water breaking over rocks or noise of water breaking over rocks. I like the way that sounds, but the way Bondi looks is suspiciously like Manhattan Beach in Southern California…

Bondi is a popular beach and the name of the surrounding suburb in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Bondi Beach is located 4 miles east of the Sydney central business district, and it’s a bit of a crowded drive, as Bondi beach is VERY popular…

Welcome To Bondi – Room For Everyone!

When you get there, however, you quickly realize that the beach is huge, with plenty of room for everyone…
so the first thing we all did was get pictures of ourselves with this gorgeous beach behind us…

Well, I got pictures…Sasha needed some caffeine…

Sasha Grey Coffee

And, while discussing some behind-the-scenes footage that Sasha shot herself the day before, she got a bit of a “gummy” reception…

Sasha Grey Surfboard

Lose The Gum, Battle The Surf!

After our gum adventure, we headed down the beach to film Sasha getting surfing lessons…while there are better places to surf in Sydney, NONE had this look…

The beach is crescent shaped, surrounded by small cliffs with hiking trails, and of course, lots of apartments with perfect views of the ocean…

Sasha’s Surf Lessons!

Sasha was eager to take her first ever surfing lesson…and if you go to Bondi, know there are many surf shops lining the beach that offer instruction as well…so you can show up to Bondi in the morning and be surfing within hours…

Sasha Grey the Surfer

We had limited days in Sydney to film, so our goal was to film Sasha training for a half hour, then get her out on the water for some surfing shots…we all agreed that thirty minutes of training wasn’t fair, but Sasha as always was a real trooper…because we were filming the entire thing as well…

Sasha Grey Surfing

Sasha took to it immediately, getting comfortable with the board, the way you ride out on the water and set yourself up for the wave…it all went very smoothly…and of course we shot the instruction from every conceivable angle as well…

Sasha Grey Surf Lesson

I give Sasha a lot of credit for learning so quickly, as she also had to “host” the segment and pay attention to the Instructor and the Producers simultaneously…After her instruction, Sasha grabbed her board and headed out into the water…and once again, she was quite the trooper, since she got her first taste of the water just a moment after I shot this…and it is COLD!

Sasha paddled out to find waves over and over so we could film her…and most times she spent a few moments upright before kneeling down on the board and cruising into shore…

Great Job Sasha!

I will say, Sasha did a great job after only a half hour…I captured this shot of Sasha “yelping” after she fell into the cold water…

It WAS cold, but she never complained, and paddled out over and over again so we could get the shot we needed…then, while Sasha was changing, I headed out to get a few more pictures of this gorgeous locaiton…

The Beauty Of Bondi!

As you can see, it’s a gorgeous beach with plenty of room to stretch out…and there is plenty of beach to explore as well. If you walk the length of beach, you find yourself on rocks that jut out into the ocean, and if you follow them around, you get some amazing shots looking back at Bondi as well…

Dozens of people were scattered along this side of the beach, taking in the view and relaxing…that is one thing I noticed about Sydney: the people are relaxed, casual…very “beach community” in their vibe…there’s no rush because the view is too beautiful to hurry away from…

Introducing Todd Miller!

Of course, my brilliant Production Manager Todd Miller arranged everything flawlessly as always, and asked me to get this shot of him – an inside joke for a friend of his. I was happy to do so, but now I share with all of you as well…you’ll have to ask him what it means…

It was a great afternoon of filming – and Sasha did a terrific job as always. I have posted some additional stories of our Australia filming, so search “Sasha Grey” and see more of our adventures down under!

Welcome To Melbourne, Sasha!

I traveled to Australia with Sasha Grey to film some lifestyle segments, and our first stop was the gorgeous city of Melbourne!

melbourne australia

Melbourne is a beautiful city, located on the southern coast of Australia, very far south – in fact, if you look on an atlas, you will see that Melbourne is very close to the South Pole.

Eureka!

More than just being a gorgeous city, Melbourne also has the tallest building in the southern hemisphere – the Eureka Tower!

eureka tower melbourne

Of course, we HAD to go up to the top – and we found ourselves on the 88th floor…and we were filming the entire thing, of course…

sasha grey australia

Once we were on the 88th floor, we walked around the entire perimeter in order to see all of Melbourne stretched out below…

Sasha Enters “The Cube!”

After absorbing the view, we were given the opportunity to take Sasha into “the Cube”, a small compartment on the 88th floor – with frosted glass so you couldn’t see out at all…naturally, Sasha rushed in!

We all had to put hospital-style slippers over our shoes so we wouldn’t scrape the floor…and we got a short introduction for what was to happen next…Sasha was excited to see what that would be, and moments later, we found out!

sasha grey-in-tower

88 Stories High! The Real Tower Of Terror!

As I said, Melbourne’s Eureka Tower is the tallest building in the southern hemisphere….after going up to the 88th floor, we all got into a cube – and this happened:

So as you saw, the cube extends away from the building and then the frosted glass goes completely clear – and you are suspended over air – with great views everywhere including straight down!

Sasha Signing

We filmed in Melbourne for two days – and while we were there, Sasha appeared for a signing at a local store, where hundreds of fans lined up to meet her…

I was very impressed with Sasha – how terrific she was with all of her fans – signing pictures and posing for pictures with each one of them…and talking to them in a casual, fun way…it was a great event…

sasha grey

I am always impressed with talent who can exude a positive, friendly attitude with fans, talking to each one just enough to make them feel special, especially when there are hundreds waiting…

Sasha was a total professional, terrific to work with, and it made the entire shooting experience in Melbourne relaxed and fun…we only had two days in Melbourne but we got to see a lot of it in that time…and the Melbournians were gracious and friendly as well.

After the signing, we posed together – I take a lot of pictures, but it is always the best way to remember our team’s fun Melbourne adventure! And speaking of adventure…

Melbourne’s Crown Casino Finale!

Melbourne Australia

After the signing event, we went to Melbourne’s famous Crown Casino for dinner, and then it was time to head back to our Hotel…

Melbourne Australia

So we traipsed through the casino, took a few turns and went past the same restaurant we had just exited…

melbourne casino

So it was back through the casino again – all we wanted to do was find the exit – and we finally found ourselves outside on a terrace overlooking the taxi stand…

melbourne casino

Unfortunately, the taxi stand was on the other side of a set of huge cement “planters” – ten feet high and blocking our way. So all of us, including Sasha, climbed over the planters and dropped down to the ground – about ten feet below…and we all just laughed and laughed – then we headed over to the taxi stand, where a huge mass of people waited…and taxis stood idle.

Melbourne Australia

Not knowing the procedure, I just walked up to an empty taxi and we all got in, and we all left a huge group of people standing by the taxi stand…not quite sure what just happened, we all just laughed and called it a night, and the next morning we were off to Sydney…after two days of adventures in one of the most beautiful cities in the world…Melbourne!

Time to head back to Australia with the terrific Sasha Grey – for an underwater adventure like no other!

Sasha Grey Underwater

Let’s Swim With The Sharks!

Yes, this is Sasha Grey inside a shark tank. No partitions, nothing between her and the sharks. Here is how she got there: as you may have read on this blog before, I had the chance to film some stories in Australia with Sasha Grey. Here we are at Bondi Beach:

sasha grey john rieber

This was the day that Sasha agreed to surf for the first time – always up for a challenge:

Sasha Surfs Bondi Beach!

You can see some of Sasha’s great behind-the-scenes surfing videos here:

And Now, Time For Sharks!

Sasha Grey Sharks

Along with learning to surf, Sasha agreed to go with us to the Manly Beach Aquarium – where they have a huge tank full of sharks and stingrays – and you are allowed to climb in there with them!

Swimming With Sharks!

I also posted about Sasha’s adventures inside a shark tank, and I got a ton of feedback from her fans – everyone wanted to see more pictures of Sasha among the sharks…so here goes – and this time with video!

Sasha Grey Sharks

Sasha Gets Instructed!

The first thing that happened was Sasha’s dive prep – she had to learn how to breathe underwater – this was her first time with scuba gear…but even though she had never done it before, she was a real trooper…doing a “speed” version of training in a side pool so we could film the segment with the sharks, who were hovering nearby…

Sasha Grey shark diving

And Here’s Some Video!

I filmed some of the instructions as well…here you go:

Sasha soaked up the instruction, knowing we had a limited amount of time to film at the Aquarium before it opened to the public. So, even though she had NEVER been scuba diving before, she focused on what needed to be done and did it. Then, it was time to go meet some sharks! First, the trainer and Sasha walked very slowly into the large part of the tank…

Sasha Grey Shark Tank

Talk About Your Super-Sized Stingray!

Here is what it looked like for us – we were all safely protected in a tunnel with the tank all around us – with the glass protection it didn’t seem like that big a deal…until we saw the size of the stingrays and sharks that were inside with Sasha….and yes, that is one BIG Stingray…

stingray sasha grey

Sasha’s Tanked!

While we were in the shadow of the stingray, Sasha was INSIDE the tank with them…focused on moving slowly and always walking, never swimming in the water – as that would attract the wrong type of attention….I mean, look at how close they were to her!

Sasha Grey Stingray

As it turns out, the Stingray was a bit of a ham…showing up in shot after shot with Sasha, like this photo bomb:

Sasha Grey and Stingray

Sasha’s Shark Encounter!

Once Sasha acclimated herself to the water, adjusted to wearing the scuba gear AND getting used to the curious Stingray, she began to walk around. Note: as I said before, they WALKED through the tank – Sasha was told that any other type of movement could make the Sharks see her as FOOD…

Sasha Grey sharks

It only took a moment for the sharks to see her – check out these pictures as the sharks become more and more curious:

Sasha Grey Sharks

Sasha Grey Swims With Shark

LOOK HOW CLOSE THEY ARE!

Sasha never flinched – even though the sharks swirled around her and, at one point, a very feisty shark flicked his tail at her head – but she remained cool, calm and amazingly collected considering that!

Sharks Sasha Grey

Sasha’s CLOSE ENCOUNTER!

Remember, there are no partitions or screens in the water – look at how close Sasha is to these sharks! This is no joke – there is NOTHING between her and the sharks…and while the Instructor was nearby, and there was a camera man inside the tank as well, this is a VERY BRAVE Sasha Grey in this tank…remember, she had NEVER been scuba diving before this moment…and here she was standing alone among Sharks!

Sasha Grey Shark

A Shark Photo Bomb!

This next picture is really amazing: as Sasha is posing for me through the glass, TWO Sharks line up for a hilarious photo bomb! Or, as Sasha said later, “they were deciding which one was going to eat me first!”

Sasha Grey Sharks Photo bomb

I LOVE how well-behaved these two Sharks are: mugging it up for the camera…I also got a shot of one of them giving me the evil eye…

Sasha Grey Swims With Shark

Sasha stayed in the water for almost a half hour, and after awhile the sharks lost interest – they got used to her and she got used to them – and so the smaller fish stopped by for a look at her as well:

Sasha Grey Underwater

Congrats Sasha!

Even though she had never scuba’s before, Sasha was unafraid – she walked right in there and hung out with the stingrays, fish and sharks inside that tank…kudos to Sasha!

Alison Down Under!

More adventures with the great Host Alison Haislip – this time in Sydney, Australia!

I was filming at Bondi Beach, and Alison came by to see the shoot – so of course we got a picture together…if you think this ISN’T one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, you would be WRONG:

Bondi Beach Australia

And Don’t Forget The Opera House!

Yes, when it comes to amazing views, it is tough to beat this one, of the iconic Sydney Opera House and the Harbor Bridge…

Sydney Opera House

We filmed all around the area, and ate in the shadow of the Opera House as well – as you will soon see….but while we were shooting, Alison was off on a different adventure! First, here she is with our great Producer Torie – filming a special surfing segment – which I will showcase later – but first, Torie and Alison had to go CLIMBING…

Alison Haislip Australia

Torie And Alison Climb Harbor Bridge!

Torie was producing segments with me in Sydney, and we came up with the idea to have Alison climb to the top of the Harbor bridge, something that thousands of people do every year…

harbor bridge sydney

So, it seemed like a good idea at the time, and Alison as always was up for the adventure – and so they climbed it with a group – much like this group doing it in lousy weather…you can see the group on top of the bridge on the upper right of the screen – you are tethered to the bridge and you literally walk up it!

Sydney Harbor bridge climb

Alison and Torie’s Excellent Adventure!

This wasn’t the duo’s first great adventure together…here is the entry I posted about their London shoot the year before…

http://johnrieber.com/2012/12/18/alison-haislip-the-london-grind-travels-with-alison/

alison-haislip London

That’s Torie with the blond hair, producing Alison’s London standups. That was then, this is now – in Sydney Australia, eager for a challenge…so they set off for the top of the Harbor bridge, and it was only later I learned that Torie had a fear of heights!

sydney opera house and harbor bridge

Dinner With Alison and Ross!

After everyone finished filming for the day, it was time to eat! Another Producer on the shoot, Ross, joined Alison and I for dinner – along with legendary Production Manager Todd Miller – in the shadow of the famed Opera House, in a restaurant literally underneath the bridge. For some reason, I decided to film Alison contemplating our restaurant – and captured her in all of her 360 degree glory:

Alison Haislip Menu Top

Once we sat down, I got a picture of Alison and Ross checking out the menu. As soon as I took the picture, I realized it appeared that Alison was holding onto her top! So I took another picture to make sure there was no mistake:

Alison Haislip Ross Beeley

So we ordered, and Alison dug right in to the bread…

Alison Haislip bread

Appetizer Dilemma!

Then Alison got her appetizer, which APPEARS to be beef Carpaccio..I honestly don’t remember now, and it looks like Alison wasn’t even sure THEN…

Alison Haislip Australia

Alison’s Aussie Dinner Surprise!

Alison Haislip Sydney Australia

But that was nothing compared to what showed up next! Yes, it was quite the “Surf & Turf Tower!” Chunks of grilled steak on a skewer, then hunks of fish, topped by grilled “Bugs!”

“BUGS?!?!?!”

These creatures are a hybrid of langoustines, shrimp and lobsters…here is what they look like when you buy them at the seafood counter:

sydney Moreton Bay bugs

The skewer of food was not only impressive in size, but a monster to try and eat! But after her initial shock, Alison dug in and did what she could…and then it was time to attack dessert!

Alison Haislip dessert

As a great Supervising Producer, Ross seemed to be trying to “COAX” the flavor out of his dessert…but both were delicious…and I can now assume Ross will NEVER let me photograph him eating again…

ross dessert

Alison seemed pleased to discover the cake-and-jam center to her boxed confection…

Alison Haislip

Afterwards, for reasons that I still don’t remember, I decided to film them outside the restaurant, as Alison discusses her upcoming shoot where she dives with sharks:

It was a great night – good food, fun conversation, the Sydney Opera House in the distance – just one more reason that Sydney Australia is such a great city!

Surf’s Up For Alison Haislip – And The Notorious “Bra Boys!”

Alison Haislip Bra Boys surf

Surf’s Up, Alison!

Time to head back to Australia, where Alison Haislip surfed with the legendary Bra Boys!

alison haislip surfing australia

Meet A Bra Boy!

For those who don’t know, THIS is a “Bra Boy”…

bra boys

Alison Haislip Bra Boys

The “Bra Boys” is an Australian gang founded and based in Maroubra, an eastern suburb of Sydney, New South Wales. Dating back to the 1990s, the gang has gained notoriety through violent clashes with members of the public and police. That said, they LOVED Alison…

alison haislip with bra boy

Here’s what Alison says about that day: “what i remember is being in the car on the way there, and being told that the Bra Boys were kind of like a gang…and that one of them was currently on trial for something.” Indeed! More on that in a moment…

Here is one of the Bra Boys with Producers Gabe and Torie, posing in a much less violent way…

Bra Boys

The Bra Boys Movie!

The gang achieved national and international attention in 2007 with the release of a feature-length documentary entitled “Bra Boys: Blood is Thicker than Water”, written and directed by members of the gang.

Check out the trailer:

alison haislip with bra boy

In an interview, “Bra Boy” Koby Abberton pointed out the “Bra” is a reference to the gang’s suburb, Maroubra, and partly after the street slang for brother. Some members of the gang tattoo “My Brother’s Keeper” across the front of their chest, “Bra Boys” and Maroubra’s postcode “2035″ on their backs.

bra boys

Our Bra Boy had all of his credentials on him…

bra boys tattoo

So Of Course, Alison Surfs With Them!

Alison Haislip Bra Boys surf

Alison, as always, is up for any challenge, and that meant learning to surf so she could catch a wave at Manly Beach in Sydney with the “Bra Boys”…

Alison Haislip Bra Boys

Alison Haislip surfs Australia

Here are some of the behind-the-scenes shots of Alison doing on-camera stand ups on the beach, as well as getting instructions from the boys…before heading out into the cold grey surf…

Alison Haislip surfing

Alison did a great job learning to surf and interviewing the buys…as she remembers: “i really didn’t know what to expect from them, but they turned out to be the loveliest group of guys.” Especially considering they almost didn’t make the shoot!

Alison Haislip Australia

Slippery “Boys”!

Gabe remembers was how difficult they were to actually book for the shoot. “I couldn’t understand why Sunny Abberton (founding member and director of the doc) kept changing the dates on us and i wasn’t even sure they were going to be there when we arrived!”

Well, there was a reason for that…

alison haislip surfing australia

Gabe found out the reason for the group’s reluctance to commit to the shoot date with Alison: “Turns out that his brother Jai had a court appearance, and they were all witnesses for the defense. I believe Sunny was late to court because of the shoot!”

Court Date Or Surf Date With Alison – Easy Choice!

alison haislip with bra boy

Even with the pending court date the same day, they showed up for Alison, they did the shoot, and if they went off to court afterwards….well, that was their problem, not ours!

According to Gabe, “as tough and dirty as they looked and acted, they were all sweethearts. They all loved Alison and repeatedly asked her out.”

Surf’s Up Indeed!

Alison Haislip surfs

So the boys surfed with Alison on what was an overcast, cold cold day at the beach…but as always, Alison never complained!

Alison Haislip Surfing Australia

And she didn’t do too bad on the water…Alison was always a quick study – and her natural athleticism helps her tackle any sport quickly…

alison haislip surfing australia

“Also, I’m A Terrible Surfer”

This was Alison’s last memory from the shoot, but I disagree: even with little training, she rode the board and did a great job – and as you’ve seen, the guys loved her!

alison haislip surfing

alison haislip

More Trivia About The Shoot!

This from Gabe: “the funniest thing- see the kid on the left with the misfits shirt in the pic below?”

Bra Boys Alison Haislip

According to Gabe, the guy in the misfits shirt was the angriest one of all. “Trash talking us and the crew. UNTIL he realized Peter was the host or “ready steady cook!”

Now this is hilarious…Peter is to the far right….and he was, at the time, the host of a very popular show in Australia…

Once the misfit boy saw Peter, “then he was a puppy dog- I think this was the day peter had baked this ridiculously awesome brownies.” Yes, Peter baked for the Bra Boys! More on Peter in a minute…

Let’s Meet The Whole Team!

As I mentioned, an absolutely TERRIFIC team on this trip…

Alison Haislip Australia

Time to thank them all – when I started to work on this post, I asked them for a few reflections on the shoot – which are all included above…but here are some additional shots of the team in action!

Super Producer Torie Coloruno-Caretto!

Torie, as well as her husband Corrado, are two of the best Producers I have worked with…focused, organized, professional and creative…so when Gabe took a picture of Torie and titled it “looking the wrong way”, i knew he wasn’t serious…

Alison Haislip Producer Torie Coloruno-Caretto

Torie had this to add: “…Gabe hit on every single detail that I remember…except…Gabe, remember when you really wanted one of their hats? They made poor Peter follow them around after our shoot and they were very concerned that you get a hat…” Well, Peter came through, and here is the hat that Gabe got from the Bra Boys!

Bra Boys hat Gabe Friedman

The Genius Of Gabe Friedman!

Of course, readers of this blog will recognize Gabe’s name – as he was one of the creative geniuses behind Troma’s brilliant “Poultrygeist” – read all about this Tromatic masterpiece HERE:

http://johnrieber.com/2012/02/11/tromas-top-ten-the-tromatic-classics-unveiled/

Troma Gabe Friedman

As you can see, Gabe is VERY tough – on this trip, he actually filmed one night in the King’s Cross district of Sydney – their roughest party zone, and he witnessed a brutal beating…I accidently sent him into a battle zone…but he is a terrific Producer – and anyone with Troma on their resume MUST work with me!

The Legendary Todd Miller!

todd miller sasha grey shoot

Todd Miller was the Production Manager on the entire Australia shoot. Gabe was nice enough to share this photo of Todd, who apparently was VERY happy to see that Australia sells “Jack and Coke” IN A CAN!

Todd Miller Australia

Ready Steady Cook! Peter Everett Worked With Us!

And as for Peter: Gabe remembered how the one Bra Boy was rude until he realized that Peter Everett was on our team!

peter everett

Yes, Peter worked with us in Sydney – and he’s a GREAT guy: funny, energetic and a great guide to Australia….here he is with the team, on the far right of the picture….

Bra Boys Alison Haislip

But Peter was much more than that! He was also the Host of Australia’s most popular cooking show! “Ready Steady Cook!” is a hugely popular Australian cooking competition show that airs on Network Ten.

Everywhere we went, people would stop Peter for autographs, and we didn’t realize the reason why for several days! We should have known, as he ALWAYS brought cookies and cakes to the set!

And as you can see, EVERYONE wanted a picture with him!

Peter Everett Australia

The “Bra Boys” adventure was a great shoot with a great team!

“Before we go any further, let’s get this out of the way. I want you to do three things for me.

One. Do not be offended by anything you read beyond this point.

Two. Leave your inhibitions at the door.

Three, and most important. Everything you see and hear from now on must remain between us…”

Fair enough!

Sasha’s Travel Adventures!

If you’ve read any of my previous posts, you know that I had the chance to travel to Australia with Sasha, exploring one of the greatest countries in the world!

Sasha Grey On Sexpo Stage

Here she is filming with our crew at Sydney’s convention center…and she also got the chance to take on some much more dangerous sports as well!

Sasha Gets A Shark Photo Bomb!

sasha grey swimming with sharks

Those were indeed REAL LIVE SHARKS photo bombing Sasha as she walked among them at Sydney’s Aquarium…and no, there are NO barricades or glass between her and the sharks!

Here’s a short video all about it her adventure – first up, getting instruction from her Shark Master – and asking if she can “walk like a duck underwater!

Sasha Grey Sharks

Then it was time to walk into the tanks and hang out with the sharks…we were all, of course, safely kept behind thick glass!

Sasha Grey Sharks

Sasha Gets “Brushed Back!”

Then it was time to “interact” with the sharks…remember, there is nothing between her and those sharks! Here’s a video in which she discusses the “tail flipping” incident!

World’s Ten Most Creative Sandwiches!

Elvis Is Hungry!

Elvis Presley eating a cheeseburger

Elvis loved a good meal, we all know that. He would have loved this one: imagine how the King would have felt to see all of his favorite things on one plate! Yes, it tops the list for the world’s ten most creative sandwiches!

SANDWICH #10 – THE “PEANUT BUTTER – BANANA ON BACON BREAD-WICH!”

bacon peanut butter and banana

Yes, it’s a “peanut butter – bacon – banana” sandwich, but in this case, the bacon is the bread! Weaves together, the bacon hold a thick slab of banana and creamy peanut butter – all of your important food groups on one plate!

Here are NINE MORE wacky sandwiches from the world of food:

#9 – THE CHICK-FIL-E!

Badhappy Poutine in Chicago offers this doozy: it’s a cheeseburger mashup – a unique burger than also has all of the elements of a great sandwich – but SO MUCH MORE!

John Rieber Frosted Flake Chicken Sandwich

What I’m holding is a cheeseburger that is topped with FRIED CHICKEN - and then topped again with Gorgonzola, Chili Pepper-Maple Glaze, Sunny egg, Creole Mayo, House Pickles, HappySauce, and finally:

FROSTED FLAKES!

Frosted Flake Chicken Sandwich

So next time you can’t decide whether to have a burger or a chicken sandwich, just head to Badhappy and have both!

Now, to get an early start on Father’s Day:

#8 – THE DAD-WICH!

WORLD'S STRANGEST SANDWICH

OK, this one is really creative: someone wanted to honor their dad, so they created a tie-shaped torpedo sandwich! Stuffed with grilled steak, Swiss, cheddar and fried onions, you can eat it or wear it – or both!

#7 – THE QUADZILLA!

World's Wildest Sandwiches

Time to head to Nathan’s Real Barbecue, located in Safford, Ariz. in order to try their “Quadzilla Sandwich!”

Consisting of “a quarter-pound rib sandwich on top, four third-pound burger patties, eight strips of thick bacon, four slices of extra thick Pepper Jack cheese, pickles, onions and a TON of barbecue sauce,” this is what The Who once called “Meaty beaty big and bouncy!”

Too much? Sometimes the most unique is also the simplest!

#6 – ENGLAND’S “CHIP BUTTY!”

french fry sandwich

The English have a reputation for restraint. Well, they’ve proved it here: the “Chip Butty” is just that!

Just steak fries on bread, with either ketchup or brown sauce. This is for those of you who REALLY want to carbo-load….and if it’s a bit unwieldy, try this on for size:

#5 – THE HANDWICH!

THE HANDWICH

Yes, you can bite your own thumb off first, or go right for the pinky. Either way, you’ve got a “handful” of great taste! Put whatever you want between those mitts…like perhaps 7-8 pounds of meat like this one?

#4 – The MELO!

The Melo

Time to head to the world famous Carnegie Deli, New York City!

Carnegie Deli pays homage to NY Knicks basketball player Carmelo Anthony, with the towering meat orgy aptly named “The Melo”.

wacky sandwiches

Pile It ON, Anthony!

How much is too much? Well, the $22 sandwich features pastrami, corned beef, salami, bacon, lettuce, tomato and Russian dressing, all on several slices of rye. The weight? More than three pounds and counting!

Now, what if you want to engage your mind as well as your palate?

#3 – THE RUBIK’S CUBEWICH!

world's craziest sandwich

This is easy to explain: it’s meat and cheese. Arrange them all the same way, or just eat it and let your stomach work out the rest! A brain and palate teaser in one!

Rubik's Cube Sandwich

Of course, sometimes a sandwich just isn’t a meal unless it includes something that will offend most people – with that in mind, time to head to China!

#2 – THE DONKEY SANDWICH!

donkey burger
china donkey burger

Yes, there is a popular street cart food in Beijing consisting of donkey meat, often with some lettuce or peppers on crispy bread called Huoshao. In Hebei province, they sometimes say,

“In Heaven there is dragon meat, on Earth there is donkey meat.”

I can only imagine…and finally, here’s one in which you HAVE to imagine, since it’s a:

#1 – THE SURPRISE-WICH!

surprise sandwich

OK, let’s get started! A nice loaf of bread – I am already getting hungry just thinking about what to do with it…oh wait, someone beat me to it!

world's craziest sandwich

Surprise!

OK, you got me – I don’t have to do a thing! You see, the bread has been baked AROUND the sandwich, so just cut into it to find out exactly what you will be eating – which, in this case, is apparently a TON of meat and cheese!

wacky sandwiches

I love getting a surprise, but I’m not alone…

HONORABLE MENTION – BECAUSE IT’ NOT A SANDWICH – IT’S A TURTLE!

real turtle-burger

OK, the idea of a unique sandwich has gone too far! A man tried to smuggle his pet turtle through security in China’s Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport by hiding it in a KFC hamburger!

The incident occurred when a man was about to board China Southern Airlines flight 345 to Beijing, Guangzhou Daily reported. X-ray screening machines detected a few “odd protrusions” sticking out of a KFC burger that the man had packed in his bag.

Airport staff determined that the protrusions looked suspiciously like turtle limbs, and asked to inspect the passenger’s luggage.

“There’s no turtle in there, just a hamburger,” he reportedly insisted. “There’s nothing special to see inside.”

turtle-burger sandwich

Well, airport staff uncovered the pet turtle hidden inside the burger. When asked why he had devised this strange idea, the suspect said that he had only wanted to travel together with his “beloved” turtle!

How can you argue with that? Well, argue away by leaving a comment below!

Castaway! Amazing, Dangerous Real-Life Island Escapes!

Ever thought about escaping to a deserted island? You know, getting permanently lost in paradise?

lucy-irvine

Well, meet the woman who did just that! It’s an amazing real-life Robinson Crusoe adventure, that began when 26-year old Lucy Irvine answered a newspaper ad!

Here’s the incredible book that tells her story!

Castaway!

castaway

I love to share great books, and this is certainly one! It’s one of the most incredible true-life stories – a fascinating tale of the most exotic, extreme adventure anyone could undertake!

Author Lucy Irvine was born in 1956 in Whitton, Middlesex. She ran away from school very early and had no full-time education after the age of thirteen. Seeking a change in her life, she saw this ad in a local newspaper:

Castaway newspaper ad

“WRITER seeks “wife” for year on tropical island”

And of course, Lucy answered that ad in 1981 and ended up spending a year on Tuin, a microscopic island located just north of Australia and south of Papua New Guinea…talk about isolated!

castaway island map

Tuin island is a dot of an island, located just north of the tip of Australia, and south of Papua New Guyinea…here is a look at the area, but the island isn’t even mentioned…

Castaway deserted island life

Here is Lucy and “G” on their first day on the island…Lucy never used “G”‘s full name, but don’t worry, you learn much about his life, and history, what led him to place that newspaper ad – and their incredible year of survival together on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere…

Lucy Irvine Castaway

This is just one of the pictures from the book, showing life on the island…as Lucy points out early in the book, the intense heat led her to discard her clothing early on…here is a shot of her “fishing” for her dinner…

Castaway on a deserted island

A Beautifully Written Gem!

The book is full of pictures of life on the island…but even better, Irvine is a skilled writer, giving a beautifully written account of the physical and emotional toll taken by living on an island…with someone you barely know!

deserted island life

After reading this book, I had a new found respect for local islanders who live their life in such an isolated part of the world…Lucy’s year on the island is full of suspense, heartache, laughter and wonder…

Lucy Irvine is also the author of a novel, “One is One”, as well as “Castaway” and an account of her early years, “Runaway.” She has three sons and lives in the Highlands of Scotland.

LUCY IRVINE

The Original “Castaway” Movie!

Long before Tom Hanks starred in “Cast Away”, acclaimed Director Nicolas Roeg also made a film about life on a deserted island…based on Irvine’s book!

castaway-1986-oliver-reed-and-amanda-donahoe

Nicolas Roeg turned Lucy Irvine’s book into a film starring Oliver Reed and Amanda Donohoe – filming Lucy’s real life story! Here is the trailer for this 1986 film:

Castaway movie

I cannot recommend this book highly enough – beautifully written, honest and raw at times, Irvine really captures what life on a deserted island would be like…in addition to other books, she also wrote a followup book to “Castaway” as well:

faraway

In “Faraway”, Irvine tells the story of moving, once again, to a desert island, this time with her three boys…these books are a bit tough to find, but look for them, they are terrific! I found “Castaway” on Amazon kindle, and the others are available used…

Here is a recent shot of Lucy Irvine…

Serpent In Paradise!

And here is another fascinating non-fiction book about life in paradise – except this one turns very very bad:

Serpent In Paradise by Dia Birkett – published in 1998

This is the amazing story of the Author’s move to paradise – Pitcairn Island, the real-life location for “Mutiny On The Bounty.” But what she found was FAR FROM PARADISE….

From the Author’s website: “I was sitting in the darkened cinema at the Elephant and Castle, central London, watching the film The Bounty, starring Anthony Hopkins as Captain William Bligh and Mel Gibson as mutineer Fletcher Christian. It was drizzling outside; my mood was as dreary. The story of youthful rebellion unfolded before me on the screen. Fletcher Christian led his cast of mutineers against the authoritarian Captain Bligh, casting him over the side of the ship. Ten months later, Christian and his mutinous crew, together with a handful of Tahitian men and, most importantly, women, landed on Pitcairn Island to found a new Utopia.

As the credits for the film rolled, the words came up on screen, ‘ . . . his descendants live on Pitcairn Island to this day.’ When I emerged into the dark street and it was still drizzling, I resolved to leave for Pitcairn Island.”

“Pitcairn has no airstrip, and the only way to reach it is to hitch a lift on a cargo vessel working the route from Panama Canal across the South Pacific. It took two years of planning and persuasion to eventually land on this uttermost end of the earth. And what I found was not a living Paradise, but an outcrop of Hell. Serpent in Paradise is the story of that slow revelation.”

Birkett’s story is an amazing adventure – and a troubling look at paradise – one that shuns outsiders, and has some very dark secrets…after the book was published, half the men of the island were convicted of sexual abuse against children. Mayor Steve Christian was found guilty of five counts of rape against minors. Vanity Fair had a chilling article about this, and Birkett has written about it as well…this is a terrific memoir.

Get all of these books and escape to paradise!

I am a big supporter of Sasha’s work, because I admire how focused and driven she is. As many of you know, I had the chance to film lifestyle segments in Australia with Sasha…and she was terrific to work with…

Even though she had never done it before, Sasha willingly donned a wetsuit and learned to surf at Australia’s legendary Bondi Beach:

Sasha was an amazingly fast learner: within a half hour she was surfing! I also love this video, which captures the moment Sasha discovers that they spit their gum out on the ground in Australia just like the rest of us:

It was a great trip down under, capturing the lifestyle of the Aussies, and even cooking bugs! Yes, that is what they are called, although they are really just “giant-shrimp-with-squashed-lobster-heads” things:

Still, she cooked them, along with a kangaroo steak – they are raised commercially just for that purpose – and we had a nice taste of Australia:

Looking to give someone the ultimate gift? First, did they ever want to get away – to a place like THIS?

Kiribati

Of course, we all do! But there is one guy who not only did it – he did it twice, and he wrote all about it! And this holiday season, you can give someone the gift of adventure travel, without having to leave home!

Time To Head Back To Paradise!

travel destinations

Great travel writer J. Maartan Troost returns to the most beautiful place in the world: the south seas! You know, beautiful beaches, endless sun, and, of yes, this as well:

“The man was eaten for his ‘mana’, that is the invisible power that resides in the head.”

Yes, cannibals! But that’s what makes the adventure so much fun, right? I mean, there has to be SOME price to pay for living here:

More Paradise

Time For More Great Troost Travel!

Time to share more outstanding travel writing…here, for example is a short passage from the beginning of the book – the Author speaking to a french man about what makes the french the french:

“Dreams, he said, while pale and smelling of regurgitated chicken, do sometimes come true and this, he concluded, was how we endure the tragedy, the comedy, of life, and for a moment I was reminded of why I love the French – not even blowing chunks will ruin ‘la grande romance’ of it all.”

best travel books headhunters

Yep, J. Maarten Troost is back!

Just another hilariously written anecdote from one of my favorite Authors!

j_maarten_troost

I love this Writer! J. Maarten Troost has written four terrific travel books – I will share his other work in a moment, but let’s celebrate his new work!

south seas islands

“Headhunters On My Doorstep” is the story of Troost returning to the south seas paradise he lived on…and what he has discovered since leaving…he uses a unique structure for returning: the book is a re-examination of Robert Lewis Stevenson’s classic travel writing from the same regions decades ago….you know, the guy who wrote the classic novel “Treasure Island” ended up moving in real life to the South Seas!

Treasure Island

Troost re-traces Stevenson’s amazing journey to the South Pacific, and how his life changed once he moved there. Troost has changed, too – and the book is far more personal than any he has written before, but as always, beautifully written…

Kiribati flooding

Here is an idea of Troost’s writing style, from page 159 of the book:

“Do you have some time?” Celine asked. Oh, I don’t know. I’m on an island in the middle of nowhere, without an ongoing ticket or a way off, amusing myself by going on desultory hikes to the set of ‘Survivor: Marquesas’ in the drenching rain. Yeah, I think I’ve got a couple of minutes to spare…

Survivor-4--Marquesas-

Yes, one of the areas explored by the Author is the location of the 4th season of the reality show “Survivor”…but Troost isn’t there to play a game – he brings to life a culture that is vibrant, proud, and nearly decimated by their interaction with white people.

best travel writers

As you can see, he’s got a way with words, which is why the book is so much fun to read, and full of fascinating information – about cannibalism, for example.

“The man was eaten for his ‘mana’, that is the invisible power that resides in the head.”

tawara

There is so much to love about this book, but it is a cautionary tale as well…as the world’s climate threatens to destroy an entire way of life…

south seas island flooding

In many ways, this is his most personal – and important – work. Of course, this should leave you breathless to read ALL of Troost’s books, so just click on my link below for my story about them all!

Two Years Of Posting!

John Rieber blog

Yes, it’s the two year anniversary of this blog! When my wife Alex suggested I start this blog two years ago today, she thought it would be a fun creative outlet. She had NO idea it could lead to THIS:

bacon cube burger japan

Yes, I used that trust Alex placed in me to share things like this “bacon cube burger”, and some of you have thanked me for it. I have also shared things like THIS:

sgt-peppers-bee gees

If you don’t recognize this image, consider yourself lucky. (Yes, it’s The Bee Gees as Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band!) While this blog has been a fun project for me, it has also turned into much more: it’s been a way to share a wide variety of stories of interest to me, and more importantly, it has been a great way to meet a lot of new people with similar passions…like all of the Todd Rundgren fans I’ve met…

Todd Rundgren greatest hits

I wanted to update everyone on the blog, and of course to thank all of you who take the time to read it. Last year at this time, I had just cracked 104,000 views.

Eagles on stage with eagles logo

In the last year, I saw a huge increase in the average daily traffic to the site – thanks in part to the huge amount of interest in things like the Eagles reunion tour, which you can see above – as well as the large number of people who have been interested in seeing just HOW Marlon Brando remembered his lines on the set of “The Godfather”:

As you can see, he DIDN’T! Yes, that is Robert Duvall holding cue cards for Brando! That story has been very popular, and if you missed it, here it is:

I also shared Clemenza’s recipe for meatballs – you know, when you need to feed a dozen guys after you “go to the mattresses”:

The Beatles never cease to interest people, and rightly so – my single most viewed story of last year was this one – looking at the “lost” Beatles documentary, “Let It Be”:

I’ve had an amazing amount of interest in my behind-the-scenes looks at the show…like when Gigi, Tracy and Olivia visited Steve Harvey:

steve harvey, alex duda and jerseylicious cast

It was a great year for the team – I had more than 11,000 views of the story about the “Jerseylicious” book by Anthony and Olivia – with amazing cast pictures by Karl Giant!

Jerseylicious book back cover

So many fun posts so far, and more “Jerseylicious” to come….you know, THE WEDDING…

In addition to stories about TV and movies, I also love posting stories about music…including stories about the eagles, Paul McCartney, great new female singer/songwriters like Grace Potter, the best and worst Jame Bond themes, and of course:

Todd Rundgren fans

“Todd Is God!”

Todd fans know what that means, and they showed it in a big way this year…I want to thank the Todd Rundgren fans who have really shown support for this blog, including a retweet from Todd himself! Here is that story:

http://musicplatter.com/2013/11/01/laura-nyro-todd-rundgrens-muse-todds-retweet/

The original story was about Todd’s friendship with Laura Nyro, an amazing singer/songwriter…and apparently Todd approved!

Laura+Nyro

I posted this story and got a retweet from Todd’s twitter account – which was really cool – I’ve also been lucky enough to have been acknowledged by Director William Friedkin, Actress Rebel Wilson and the legendary singer/songwriter Paul Williams….among many others who have RT’d my stories and shared them with friends…

What’s With All The Sites?

I’m sorry if I confused some of you with the “topic-specific” sub-sites, but here’s an explanation: When I started blogging, Alex suggested a title that would capture what the site was all about – but as you see, it’s about a lot of different stuff! So I used my name as an easy entry point…

confused-face

Well, maybe not so easy, since my entire life has seen RIEBER spelled “REIBER”…So, to resolve the confusion, here’s how it works…I post virtually every single day on Johnrieber.com. I hope you all sign up to get notifications – so you won’t miss anything like THIS:

holiday entertainment

Yes, “Love Actually” is my favorite holiday film…well, except maybe for “Planes, Trains & Automobiles”…and in case you missed this post, here is a list of ALL of the best holiday films:

Time For A Fight!

I was most excited this year to start the “film fight club!” This allowed you to hammer down on the important film arguments of the day!

film fight club

The purpose of “Film Fight Club” is solely to argue about movies we love, hate, and love to hate!
This is where you can discuss your favorite James Bond theme song, as well as why you think “The Human Centipede” is a misunderstood masterpiece!

The Human Centipede

And yes, I got lots of hate comments from fans of “Centipede”, who couldn’t understand why I called it “misguided”! Check out all of the film battles here!

Forget movies, let’s see the world!

I know that some of you enjoy vacationing here:

I posted a number of stories recounting my G4 shoot in Australia with Sasha Grey: everything from her surfing Bondi Beach – to getting photo bombed by live sharks:

sasha-with-two-overhead-sharks

I always have to remind people that there was NOTHING between Sasha and those sharks…and then there was this clip of Sasha in the tallest building in the southern hemisphere – by far the most popular video I posted, with more than 24,000 views:

Sasha Grey in Eureka Tower

Sasha went 88 stories high in Melbourne, Australia’s Eureka tower – just one of the many travel adventures I’ve been able to share. I’ve been lucky enough to travel to some really fun places, and I’ve gotten a great response from people when I post these stories on “spinningorbit”, which you can check out here:

I am overdue to share this…

best bacon cheeseburgers

One of the greatest bacon cheeseburgers I have ever eaten…it is EXACTLY the kind of food we should all be eating this holiday season…except that, for some of us, the holiday will turn out like THIS:

Time To Bite Down Hard!

a-mouthful-of-food

Everyone loves great food. These guys certainly do. That being the case, it’s time to celebrate great food – THAT COMES IN A CAN!

unique canned food

bizarre canned food

Get ready to surprise your food fanatic with some of the most unique tastes they’ve ever experienced – you’ll not only get a big hug, but perhaps a look like this as well!

cheeseburger_in_a_can

Time To Celebrate Food In A Can!

Yes, it’s time once again to bite down hard on some of the strangest stuff that comes CANNED! And yes, you know what I mean:

Cheeseburger In A Can

Cheeseburger In A Can!

Yes, my old favorite – I can NEVER get enough of this: the famous “cheeseburger in a can!” And not only can you find this online, you can find this picture of what someone looks like AFTER eating one!

cheeseburger_in_a_can

Time to look at the strangest food that comes packaged in metal – the famous and infamous “foods in a can!” And what better way than with my all-time favorite:

wackiest canned food

The concept behind this product is easy: someone in Germany knew that hikers and campers would need a portable, “quick to make and easy to consume” food product – and nothing beats a cheeseburger, right?

Watch This Guy Bite Down Hard!

And yes, there is even a VIDEO of someone eating a cheeseburger in a can! Here is the experience in all of its glory:

Cheeseburger in_a_Can

If you want to see how this food monstrosity was reviewed by those brave enough to eat it, I have compiled a list of great quotes – just click my link HERE!

http://johnrieber.com/2012/01/22/worlds-wildest-burgers/

It’s hard to imagine that you can ever top a cheeseburger in a can – it is, after all, a food product that was never supposed to be put inside a metal tube – unlike this stuff!

unique canned food

So, in speaking of the greatest food ever canned, it’s time to look at some of the craziest stuff ever stuffed into a can!

Hungarian Canned Bacon!

unique bacon product canned bacon

Yes, our good friend bacon is also available in a canned version. And I see why it works so well – just stand it up on end, roll it up and slide it in! Now you have the goodness of bacon whenever you want it – just pop the top and unroll some deliciousness!

bacon in a can

I can imagine taking a can of bacon along on my next camping trip to adding it to my cheeseburger in a can – once we have canned mayo, it’s all golden!

Canned Bacon

It’s hard to criticize canned bacon, which seems like a very normal canned food product…unlike THIS:

Hold Your Tongue!

OK, time to edge into wacky territory, and here’s an idea for you: canned sheep tongue!

canned sheep tongue

Many cultures eat tongue, so it is something you will find on more progressive ethnic menus…beef tongue is eaten like bologna, so it’s not THAT unusual:

canned sheep tongue

Well, after looking at ten pounds of sheep’s tongue, maybe it IS UNUSUAL:

Armadillo Meat!

Now, from the wacky to the bizarre, let’s take a look at other mystery meats coming out of a can soon:

bizarre canned food

Yes, you can keep a can of Armadillo at the ready, just in case you have the need – now you have the ability as well!

Creamed Armadillo On The Half Shell!

bizarre food

I can only imagine that if you want some Armadillo, but don’t have the time to “cream” it yourself, this is for you…and speaking of strange “creamed meats in a can”:

Creamed Possum!

bizarre canned food items

I almost wish this was a joke – unless I am missing something, Possum doesn’t come to mind as a meat to eat in any way, especially creamed.

But, just in case this sparks some sort of cooking frenzy in you, I actually found a website that is all for you – here is a possum recipe!

http://southern.food.com/recipe/stuffed-roast-opossum-107969

Pork Brain In Milk Gravy – Hold The Cholesterol!

Time now to move onto a “smarter” meal:

bizarre canned food

Yes, if you need a week’s worth of cholesterol in a single day – with “milk gravy” no less, then I guess pork brains are for you! And here is a canned food product that doesn’t beat around the bush!

libbys_potted_meat_can

“Potted Meat Food Product!”

Hey, talk about “truth in advertising!” It’s a potted meat food product – there are many on the market, and this is NO knock against the quality of Libby’s version: it’s a product, much like spam, that uses lesser parts of an animal, and adds seasoning and spices…it’s mostly used on crackers as a sort of pate:

canned meat

Among the ingredients: Mechanically separated chicken, pork skin, partially defatted cooked pork fatty tissue, partially defatted cooked beef fatty tissue, vinegar, less than 2% of: salt, spices, sugar, flavorings, sodium erythorbate and sodium nitrite.

Again, there is no knock against this type of food – it’s just a unique packaging style to be sure! And, to end on a very pointless note, I leave you with this:

spotted dick

Spotted Dick!

That’s right! Look it up! And yes, they sell it in a can!

STILL not enough for you? Then what about this new way to eat sushi!

sushi in a tube

Yes, sushi poppers! Sushi in a tube is close to food in a can, right?

Click HERE to read all about this amazing new food product!

http://johnrieber.com/2013/03/19/the-future-of-sushi-behold-sushi-poppers/

Enjoy all of this unique food goodness – and remember to bite down hard!
